      Who is Saint Trofim

      On August 5, the Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Martyr Trofim. According to legend, during the persecutions of Christians, he was captured along with 12 like-minded individuals and subjected to cruel torture. The martyrs had their shins broken and were thrown into the fire. However, the flames did not harm them — they emerged from the fire unharmed. After that, they were beheaded for their faith. In the folk tradition, the day was named Trofim the Sleepless. Why Sleepless? Because on this day, people got up very early, before dawn. It was believed that those who slept through the morning would miss their luck for the entire year. Also, it was thought that dreams on this night were prophetic and required careful interpretation.

      On Trofim the Sleepless, nature provided clear hints about the weather:

      - No pigeons seen in the morning — bad weather is coming.

      - An owl hooting in the forest — cold will come.

      What Can Be Done on August 5

      - Wake up at dawn. This is the main rule of the day. Those who woke up late would face misfortune. But those who greeted the dawn would receive a charge of energy and luck for the entire year.

      - Work in the fields. From early morning, peasants went out to the fields and gardens — the active harvest began. However, closer to noon, work was paused. There was a belief that in early August, at this time, the Poludnitsa — spirits of heat — appeared over the fields, which could cause sunstroke, fainting, hallucinations, and even death. Therefore, during the hot hours, people sought shade and took breaks.

      - Gather berries. Special attention was paid to viburnum and raspberries. Girls and children went into the forest for berries. It was believed that viburnum attracted suitors if one washed their face with its juice. And raspberry was a symbol of luck in love affairs.

      - Bake pies with berries. Housewives on this day would definitely bake pies. Each filling had a symbolic meaning:

       - Viburnum — foretold suffering from unrequited love;

       - Raspberry — predicted luck in romantic matters.

      - Harvest herbs. The day was considered favorable for gathering medicinal herbs for winter.

      There were many prohibitions on this day, all related to work, berries, and communication.

      - One must not be lazy or shirk work. Idleness on this day was considered a great sin. It was believed that those who took work lightly would bring about poor harvests and misfortunes.

      - One must not treat others with jam. If the hostess made preparations from berries, she would not let anyone taste them. It was believed that in such a case, the jam would spoil quickly.

      - One must not eat raw viburnum. The berry in its raw form would drive away luck in love. Therefore, viburnum was first cooked and only then eaten.

      - One must not break or chop viburnum branches. This would bring misfortune to the home and could destroy family happiness.

      - One must not go into the forest or to the river alone. It was considered dangerous for young men and women to be alone. It was believed that such walks affected future fate: girls risked remaining unmarried, and boys could lose their peace of mind.

      - One must not be greedy or refuse to help loved ones. Trofim's day was considered a time of generosity and support. Refusing a loan would attract financial difficulties and discord in the family.

      Why is Trofim called the Sleepless

      There are two explanations. The first: on this day, people got up early to make it to the fields before the heat. The second: it was believed that dreams that occurred on the night of August 5 were prophetic, and they had to be remembered and interpreted. Therefore, people tried not to oversleep and woke up early. It was even customary to take a piece of paper and a pen to bed to immediately write down a dream if it occurred.
