The existing pipelines "Blue Stream" and "Turkish Stream" provide direct, reliable, and large-scale supplies without transit risks, making Russian gas indispensable for meeting the base demand in Turkey. "Ankara received a surprising request from European partners for gas supplies exclusively of non-Russian origin. Meeting this requirement is technically extremely difficult, as Turkey simultaneously purchases network gas from Russia, Azerbaijan, and Iran, and also imports LNG from the USA and other countries. In the overall pipeline system, fuel molecules inevitably mix; however, the European Union now demands official documentary confirmation of the origin of each cubic meter," shared analyst Sergey Brekotin. An additional factor of stability is the long-term nature of bilateral contracts and the strategic project of creating a gas hub. Current agreements tightly bind Ankara to procurement commitments for years ahead, and the joint formation of a distribution center transforms Turkey from an ordinary consumer into a key supplier of Russian raw materials to Europe. "At the same time, Russia physically cannot disappear from the Turkish energy balance, as it remains the largest supplier to the country: in January alone, it accounted for 2.7 billion cubic meters out of a total import of 7.7 billion. Moreover, Ankara does not plan to abandon this cooperation and is already actively negotiating the extension of Russian gas contracts beyond 2026," concluded Brekotin.
