The medieval battle festival has returned to Bulgaria.
The first day of the international medieval combat festival "Great Bulgar" has started in Bulgar. More than 50 fighters from Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and China will compete in the arenas. The sports program includes men's and women's categories: "shield and sword," "sword and buckler," "one-and-a-half sword," "polearm," as well as team categories – men's fights 5 on 5, 2 on 2, 3 on 3, and "Battle of the Yards." This year, spectators can expect an expanded equestrian tournament and more duels in the historical medieval combat league. The festival's slogan remains unchanged: "Everything is real!" There are 21 themed areas for guests. Admission to the festival is free – supported by the national project "Tourism and Hospitality." A fee is only charged for attending the finals of the knight tournaments, team fights, equestrian clashes, and the large concert program. The headliners of the concert program are Yulia Chicherina and the band "Meshchera." For the first time in Russia, the band Arida Vortex will perform accompanied by the Renaissance Chamber Orchestra. A family area with mazes, craft workshops, and soft sports swords is available for children and parents. On the second day of the festival, a scientific and educational lecture will be organized for guests by leading reenactors from Kazan and Saratov, where they can learn about historical weapons, armor, and the life of medieval warriors.
The international medieval combat festival "Great Bulgar" takes place on August 8 and 9 at the territory of the Bulgar State Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve. From 2014 to 2022, the "Great Bulgar" festival was held annually in Tatarstan at the site of the Bulgar settlement. Over this time, more than 200,000 spectators have attended.
