For the first time in history, the number of people aged 65 and older has exceeded the number of children under five years old — this is a result of declining birth rates and increasing life expectancy, Axios reports, citing the U.S. Census Bureau. The document notes that the share of the older generation will continue to grow: it is projected that the number of elderly people will increase from 852 million in 2025 to approximately 2 billion by 2060. By that year, the global population is expected to reach around 10.23 billion people. The authors of the report indicate that the share of people living in countries with a fertility rate at or below the replacement level (2.1 children per woman) has sharply increased — from 45% in 2013 to 71% in 2023. Furthermore, the report states that the fertility rate is currently below the replacement threshold in the two largest countries in the world — China and India, as well as in several other densely populated states, including Bangladesh, Mexico, and Vietnam.
