A soldier taking part in the special military operation thanked volunteers for camouflage nets.
"I’m a lucky man — I have two birthdays," my interlocutor Valery laughs. "I was born on March 8, but the documents show the 18th." That’s the little surprise a son gave his mother for International Women’s Day back in 1970.
I have known the soldier’s mother, Lyubov Yakovlevna, for a long time — she is a volunteer in the group "With Love and Prayers," which we have written about more than once. Recently we were fortunate to meet her son in person — Valery came on a short leave. In 2023 the man signed a contract with the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation. He is now an active soldier in the special military operation, serving as a lance corporal and carrying out combat support tasks in a combat support company.
"Soldiers my age are called '50+.' We have to perform various tasks: deliver weapons, ammunition, fuel and lubricants, personnel, food, etc. It’s sometimes difficult, but I knew what I was getting into," says Valery, who has the callsign "Kamaz." He himself looks like that heavy truck — imposing and solid.
For courage and bravery shown during military operations, Valery has been awarded the medals "Participant of the Special Military Operation" and "For Participation in Hostilities."
"Faith in God helps me cope with difficulties. I always carry an icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker with me," Valery shares. The soldier has more than once faced death. "There were times when we had to jump out of the vehicle on the move when drones were attacking from above — my comrade would detect the 'bird' in time — that saved us. There were concussions, but I escaped without wounds," Valery recounts. The soldier spoke about the comradeship among soldiers that all participants in the special military operation mention. "One for all and all for one" — that’s the motto of all the military. More than once they helped each other when someone was wounded, carried them off the battlefield, bandaged wounds, injected painkillers. "We never leave anyone to fend for themselves, we try to carry out even the '200s' (the dead) so they can be brought home and buried," Valery says.
The headquarters of the group "With Love and Prayers" is located at building No. 9 on Promyshlennaya Street. Every day those who care about the fate of the country and its defenders gather there. A branch of the main headquarters opened in the village of Zai-Karatay in the Leninogorsky District. It was here that Valery hurried with Lyubov Yakovlevna to personally thank the volunteers for the camouflage nets that the craftswomen weave in the local club. Having bought sweets and treats for the women, Valery conveyed warm greetings from his comrades-in-arms and their gratitude for the humanitarian shipment.
"You provide invaluable help. Your support lifts the soldiers’ morale; each parcel gives us strength. Your selfless work and devotion command our respect," — the soldier’s sincere words of gratitude brought tears to most of the volunteers’ eyes.
PS. Lyubov Yakovlevna cannot hold back motherly tears as she watches her son drive away from the house. Valery bought a trailer to take the humanitarian aid away. In the cab of his SUV the camouflage nets are heading to the front. "We will definitely win. There is no other way," says Valery, callsign "Kamaz." At the front he is awaited by a four-wheeled faithful friend, a Kamaz truck with an anti-drone "mangal" (grill) welded to the roof.
