Yuri Ivashechkin, the designer of the Su-25 attack aircraft, has died.

      Soviet and Russian aircraft designer Yuri Ivashechkin, the creator of the Su-25 ground-attack aircraft and the first chief designer of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 passenger airliner, has died in his 91st year of life. This was reported by the press service of the United Aircraft Corporation (part of the state corporation Rostec), TASS reports.

      "One of the outstanding employees of our enterprise — Yuri Viktorovich Ivashechkin — has died suddenly; a wonderful person, a top-class specialist and mentor. We will keep the memory of Yuri Viktorovich in our hearts," the UAC emphasized.

      Early in his career Yuri Ivashechkin worked at the Research Experimental Institute of Parachute and Airborne Equipment. There he developed the parachute for the T-4 strategic bomber-rocket carrier, which did not go into series production.

      Since January 1961 Ivashechkin worked at the Sukhoi Design Bureau. He took part in the development of the Su-9 and Su-15 interceptor fighters, the Su-24 tactical bomber, and the T-4 strategic bomber. In March 1968 he unofficially headed the work on the development of the "item" T-8 (the future Su-25), and at the end of 1974 he officially became the head of this program. From 1980 to 1985 he served as the chief designer of the Su-25 (the attack aircraft made its first flight in 1975 and began service in 1981).

      In November 1985 the aircraft designer moved to the Mikoyan Design Bureau. In 2000 he became the first chief designer of the short-range passenger aircraft Sukhoi Superjet 100.
