The legendary fashion designer Giorgio Armani has died.
In his 92nd year, the Italian fashion designer and entrepreneur, founder of the company Armani, Giorgio Armani, passed away. This was reported by Armani Group.
“Mr. Armani, as he was always respectfully and admiringly called by employees and partners, died peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Tireless, he worked until his last days, devoting himself to the company, its collections and to various and constantly changing projects, both current and ongoing,” La Repubblica relays the company’s statement.
The farewell to the designer will be held in Milan, at Teatro Armani; it will be possible to attend on September 6 and 7. The funeral will be private, as Armani wished.
The designer was born in 1934 in the northern Italian city of Piacenza. From 1953 to 1955 he studied at the medical faculty of the University of Milan. In 1964 he joined the fashion house Nino Cerruti, where he mastered the technical skills of garment making and until 1970 was responsible for the design of the men’s line Hitman.
In 1974 he presented a collection under his own name for the first time, and a year later, on the advice of his friend the architect Sergio Galeotti, he founded the company Giorgio Armani S.p.A. Galeotti took on the financial management of the brand, which allowed Armani to focus entirely on creativity.
Under the leadership of the duo, iconic divisions were created: Giorgio Armani USA, Emporio Armani and Armani Jeans, which made high fashion accessible to a wider audience. A hallmark of the Armani empire remained its independence — the brand never became part of large luxury groups, keeping family control over all processes. In 2005 he launched his own haute couture line — Armani Privé.
