Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ) intends to begin the first stages of assembly and production of Volga cars by spring 2026. This was reported by Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov. "As far as I know, as I have been told, they expect to begin the first stages of assembly and production by next spring," TASS quotes him as saying. Manturov declined to comment on the possibility of involving a Chinese partner in the project. He also did not provide other details. Manturov spoke about plans to revive the Russian automotive brands Volga and Pobeda as early as June 2022, when he headed the Ministry of Industry and Trade. A year later he said that GAZ could resume Volga production in 2024 and present the first serial model in early summer of that year. The vehicle lineup will include three models: Volga C40 — a D-segment sedan, Volga K30 — a C-segment crossover, Volga K40 — a D-segment crossover. These new models were previously inspected by Russia’s Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. The head of government praised the cars for their modern appearance but asked the developers to localize production of the car parts that are not technologically complex. "Where is your steering wheel made, Chinese? I would like the steering wheel to be Russian. It’s not as difficult as localizing the gearbox and all the other elements. I think we should be asking ourselves: what is simple — go ahead," he said.
