The New York Times: The U.S. conducted an intelligence mission in North Korea in 2019.

The operation may have violated the law, sources tell The New York Times

In 2019 the United States conducted an intelligence mission in North Korea at the direction of President Donald Trump, The New York Times reports, citing its sources. Congress, which oversees intelligence operations, was not informed either before or after the mission's completion.

According to the publication, the Trump administration may have broken the law by failing to notify key members of Congress about the operation.

It is clarified that neither Washington nor Pyongyang officially confirmed the operation. According to sources who spoke to The New York Times, U.S. naval special forces attempted to install equipment in the DPRK to intercept communications of the country's leader, Kim Jong Un. This took place during a period of active talks between the two countries. During the special forces' landing, a boat carrying Americans was spotted near the shore, and, sources say, the special forces eliminated everyone who was in the boat.

Earlier reports said North Korean diplomats had expressed hope for improved relations with the U.S.
