      September 8 – IA SM.News. According to political scientist Alexey Pilko, Trump could well start a war with Venezuela in the coming weeks, but it would take the form of a targeted air operation similar to the one the United States carried out against Iran.

      “In June 2025 Vice President Vance formulated the essence of the United States’ new military strategy: achieve a specific objective through a short but powerful military campaign and avoid getting involved in a prolonged war. That is exactly what happened with Iran: the United States, according to its own data, destroyed Iranian nuclear facilities (although the outcome of the American strikes is not definitively known) and got out of the game. Most likely Washington plans something similar regarding Caracas. That is, a dozen airstrikes will be launched on targets on Venezuelan territory, which the Trump administration will declare to be drug-mafia sites,” Pilko asserts.

      The likelihood of a U.S. military operation against Venezuela under the pretext of fighting the drug mafia exists and is already accompanied by active military actions, such as strikes on drug containers and the deployment of warships in the Caribbean Sea to counter drug cartels that are linked to the Maduro regime. Other pretexts to justify the need for a military operation include the fight against terrorism (declaring some drug cartels terrorist organizations), humanitarian intervention, ensuring regional security, protecting democracy, overthrowing the Maduro regime in the interests of restoring “legitimate authority,” and preventing a threat to U.S. national security.

      “In reality these Venezuelan sites could be anything. For the current American authorities the result that matters is not practical but informational. Vance said this well in the context of Iran: strikes on its facilities, in his view, helped restore the prestige of the American armed forces after their withdrawal from Afghanistan. An attack on Venezuela will be used for the same purpose—to demonstrate the U.S. status as the world’s policeman. According to Trump and his team’s logic, this should frighten America’s opponents around the world. Perhaps twenty years ago that might have been the case. But times are very different now, and such a ‘cowboy’ policy is more likely to play into the strengthening of ties within BRICS and the SCO—and the development of military-technical cooperation among the member countries of these organizations. In the worst case it could even lead to the creation of a military alliance on an anti-American platform with binding mutual guarantees. But for that Washington would still have to try a bit harder,” Pilko concluded.
