A historic wooden gazebo will be recreated in Fuksov Garden in Kazan.

      Today, September 11, work will begin in Fuksov Garden in Kazan on the installation of a historic wooden gazebo being recreated by the Tom Sawyer Fest — Kazan. This was reported by the press service of the Institute for the Development of Kazan.

      Today the foundation installation began. Tomorrow, September 11, it is planned to install the posts and part of the railing, and on Saturday, September 12, the remaining elements. Assembly work will continue throughout the following week and will be completed with installation of the roof and spire.

      A wooden pavilion at this location, on the cliff above the Kazanka, appeared back in the 1900s, as evidenced by archival photographs. However, over time it was lost.

      “Repairing wooden houses over the past ten years, we have thought a lot about how much wooden architecture there was in old Kazan and how important it is to show it today. Pavilions adorned gardens and parks, exhibitions and fairs, piers and stations. And after the completion of the landscaping in Karl Fuks Garden we noticed that the late 20th-century gazebo that had replaced the historic one had disappeared, and we suggested that the architects of the Institute for the Development of Kazan consider the possibility of recreating the historic pavilion,” said Olesya Baltusova, assistant to Raisa RT and coordinator of Tom Sawyer Fest — Kazan.

      “It (the pavilion — ed.) was very graceful, with a spire. Everyone wanted it returned; our regular partners supported us in this. The firm Carpenter, our longtime helpers from the Berkutov House at 11 Fatyh Karim, where in 2019 we restored and recreated the wooden facade decoration, found a high-quality local larch. All summer we helped them in the workshop to sand and paint the parts. The architects drew the pavilion so that it would fit into the garden after the landscaping sensitively and appropriately. And most importantly, we made it ourselves, with our own hands, and wooden architecture returned to the city center,” Baltusova added.

      Volunteers assembled the gazebo from larch with the support of the movement’s general partner, Tekoresurs LLC, and thanks to the help of the architects of the Institute for the Development of Kazan, who drew up the pavilion based on archival photographs.

      The gazebo is made of larch. Work was carried out in a professional workshop over the summer. Volunteers sanded the parts, closed gaps, and primed elements.
