The magazine 'Echo of the Ages' celebrates 100 years since the publication of its first issue.

A ceremonial event was held at the IT Park on Petersburgskaya Street to mark the 100th anniversary of the release of the first issue of the magazine "Gasyrlar avazy – Echo of Centuries."

"'Echo of Centuries' has quite a long history. It is one of the old magazines of our Republic. It was founded back in 1925. When we looked through the archives of the first issues [and studied] the magazine's concept, our predecessors timed the magazine’s creation to the centenary of the Decembrist uprising," Ramil Kadyrov, the magazine’s editor-in-chief, told a "Tatar-inform" correspondent.

Many years have passed since then. In 1933 the magazine was closed for a number of political reasons — it was not permitted to publish historical documents. According to Kadyrov, the need to recreate such a magazine arose in 1995, when "the rise of national consciousness among the peoples of the Volga region began."

The main feature of the magazine is that it publishes articles supported by archival documents.

"It is essential to have an exclusive, some archival document, to be published in our magazine. We adhere to this, and that is the uniqueness of our magazine."

"Echo of Centuries" is published once a quarter; it’s easy to calculate that over 30 years of work 120 issues have already been released. Articles are printed in the original languages: Tatar, Russian and English. It is available electronically for free on the Internet, and subscriptions are also possible.

The founder and main sponsor of the magazine is the State Archive of the Republic of Tatarstan.

"I always say that for a historian the most important foundation is the source. The brightest side of this magazine and the most useful for historians is that this magazine is truly of a scholarly-documentary nature," Doctor of Historical Sciences, Honored Scientist of Tatarstan Iskander Gilyazov told a "Tatar-inform" correspondent.

He not only reads "Echo of Centuries" but also publishes in it. The research materials published in the magazine are unknown to many and may even be revealed for the first time, the historian noted. In Gilyazov’s opinion, in this field "Echo" is one of the most vivid, rich and interesting journals in Russia.

"Each issue is diverse, colorful in a good sense. The materials are devoted both to forgotten pages of the distant past and to unknown pages of 20th-century history. It is very important that the publications in the magazine are about people and events. And history is, above all, people and events," he concluded.

The event was also timed to the 85th anniversary of the birth of Doctor of Historical Sciences Damir Sharafutdinov. As head of the State Archival Service of Tatarstan, he was one of the initiators of the magazine’s revival in 1995.

"It was his brainchild. This was not a momentary whim, but a decision coordinated with President Mintimer Shaimiev and with Rustam Minnikhanov. Such well-known historians as [Bulat] Sultanbekov and [Indus] Tagirov gathered together and decided to do this. They managed to do it at the international level," archivist’s daughter Dilbar Sharafutdinova told a correspondent.

"He was very quick to take action and a very energetic person. Once the first secretary of the Tatar regional party committee, Fikryat Tabeev, addressed him: 'I looked you over, it turns out you’re a fighter, let’s have a fight.' My father replied that they should work together, not fight," Sharafutdinova also said.

According to her, Damir Sharafutdinov had a maximalist character: "If he did something, he did it wholeheartedly and seriously."

In 2011 the magazine was awarded the State Prize of the Republic of Tatarstan in the field of science and technology; it is regarded as a significant scholarly-documentary publication of the republic.

"My father was very politically literate. Once, when I was running late and could not go to vote, he said that I might be late for anything, but one must not be apolitical," Dilbar suddenly recalled.
