A unique master class was held at the University Clinic of Kazan Federal University under the guidance of Vladimir Protoschak – chief urologist of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, head of the Department and Clinic of Urology of the Military Medical Academy, colonel of the medical service, Doctor of Medical Sciences. The operating team included the head of the urological department of the KFU University Clinic, Renat Shaidullin.
During the training, urologists performed a high-tech operation to remove a kidney stone from a woman of reproductive age. The young woman, who had a history of renal colic, is planning a pregnancy and therefore decided to remove the calculus in advance to avoid possible complications in the future.
“Such operations allow patients to avoid serious complications of urolithiasis, including colic and pyelonephritis, which may require drainage and the use of antibiotics, which is especially undesirable during pregnancy and the postpartum period,” noted the master class leader Vladimir Protoschak.
The operation was performed using an innovative wireless flexible ureterorenoscope of the latest generation.
“The main advantage of the new equipment is improved ergonomics: the absence of wires significantly facilitates the surgeon’s maneuvers during the procedure. The device is equipped with two separate monitors with high-quality image output,” said the head of the urological department of the University Clinic Renat Shuydullin.
The intervention was performed without incisions, through natural passages, using a laser lithotripter, with which the stone was crushed into the smallest fragments. The material obtained was sent for analysis to determine its mineral composition and to develop an individualized program to prevent recurrent stone formation in the patient.
“This is the very medicine we dreamed of 10–15 years ago. Today such high-tech operations are becoming the standard of care for patients with urolithiasis, especially in cases where the most sparing approach is required,” emphasized Vladimir Protoschak.
The master class became an important educational event for urologists of the Republic of Tatarstan and demonstrated the high level of development of the urological service in the region.
