Which flowers can be planted in the fall?
Flowers that will delight in spring can be planted right now.
Autumn is ideal for starting garden work; you can still lay the foundation for a future garden and prepare the flowerbed for spring. In early autumn it is time to divide and transplant some perennials. This applies to plants such as astilbe, lupin, brunnera, hosta and daylilies. You can also propagate roses and periwinkle. In addition, you can plant new plants from seeds, bulbs or cuttings. Bulbous plants should be planted roughly by mid-October.
Tulips are among those flowers that can be planted in different seasons of the year. They can be planted both in spring and in autumn. Planting tulips in autumn has its advantages — the bulbs have time to root before the cold and bloom profusely in spring. Tulip bulbs are planted before the ground freezes. When choosing varieties with different flowering times, pay special attention to their ripening period, which is usually indicated on the package. Depending on the types of tulips, it may vary. In the temperate zone, tulips are planted outdoors from mid-September to mid-October. Tulip bulbs are planted no deeper than 15 cm. They should be carefully pressed into pre-prepared furrows and then thoroughly covered with soil. It is recommended to mulch the surface with peat.
Daffodils
Daffodils can also be planted in autumn; choose a period when the average daily air temperature for one and a half to two weeks has been between +10 and +12 °C. If bulbs are planted in soil that is too warm, they may not only take root but also “wake up” and begin to grow. In addition, excessive moisture is harmful to a daffodil bulb. When choosing a site for planting daffodils, keep in mind that these flowers do not like drafts or scorching sun; they should be planted in partial shade.
Crocuses
For crocuses, choose a warm elevated spot where the snow melts first. The optimal time for planting crocuses is September–October. Crocus corms are small, so they do not need to be planted deeply. The optimal planting depth is 5–8 cm, depending on the size of the bulbs. If crocuses are planted too deeply, their development will slow, but the bulbs may grow larger. The distance between planting holes is usually 5–10 cm; if you want a denser “carpet,” you can plant corms 3–5 cm apart. When planting in autumn, do not water the bulbs. But plant them into moist soil.
Can flowers be sown in autumn from seed?
When Indian summer ends and the temperature drops to −2 °C, the ideal time for pre-winter sowing arrives. Seeds that require stratification can be sown even after snowfall. However, the bed should be prepared in advance, while the ground has not yet frozen.
Autumn sowing of flowers is recommended to be denser and more generous compared to spring sowing, to reduce the risk of low germination due to winter frosts. If in spring the seedlings turn out to be too crowded, they can be thinned easily. Seedlings that have developed not in greenhouse conditions or on windowsills are better adapted to changing environmental conditions; they are more resistant to temperature fluctuations, drought and overwatering. In addition, in a natural environment plants develop more resilient immunity to various pests and diseases.
Lavender, lupin, cosmos, calendula, columbine, cornflower, candytuft, phlox, California poppy and delphinium are excellent choices for autumn sowing of a flowerbed.
