Residents of the republic are in no hurry to say goodbye to the cult phones of the 2000s, continuing to use them as their primary means of communication. Tatarstan ranked fourth among the regions of the Volga Federal District in the number of mobile-classics aficionados. Only Samara, Nizhny Novgorod and Saratov regions and the Republic of Bashkortostan ranked higher, analysts at MegaFon noted in a study based on anonymized subscriber data.
Among retro-phone users in Tatarstan the leading age group is 36–45 (28% of all owners), whose youth fell in the 2000s. They are followed by subscribers aged 46–55 (21%), with 56–65-year-olds (19%) rounding out the top three. Notably, men outnumber women by 85% among lovers of classic phones.
The top five most popular vintage devices in the republic were:
1. Nokia 6300 — an elegant button phone released in 2007 with a camera and color display;
2. Nokia 1100 — the legendary device from 2003 that set a sales record;
3. BlackBerry 8320 — a 2007 model, a Canadian smartphone with a unique keyboard;
4. Nokia 3310 — the cult phone from 2000, known for its unsurpassed reliability;
5. Samsung Galaxy S2 — the successor to the cult device that launched the famous line, debuting in 2011 with improved specs.
Despite their age, these gadgets still have devoted users in Tatarstan.
"It is pleasing to know that cult phones continue to delight owners, remaining relevant even in an era of advanced technologies. Nevertheless, time-tested devices require modern communications infrastructure to operate. To ensure stable operation for both new smartphones and beloved retro gadgets, this year we built and modernized around 500 communications facilities not only in Kazan and other cities, but also in villages and settlements across 29 districts of the republic," says Mikhail Rusinov, director of MegaFon in Tatarstan.
New base stations of the operator appeared in more than 35 small localities, including the villages of Iksuar, Kalmurzino, Kachkinovo, Kuperle, Malaya Shilna, Starye Erykly, Chirshi, Ayu; and the sela of Bakrchi, Bikchuraevo, Bolshaya Shilna, Bolshoye Shemyakino, Burdy, Verkhny Baylar, Verkhny Takermen, Zyuri, Ilbukhtino, Kildebyak, Kildyushevo, Melekes, Nizhnyaya Sun and others.
