Russians were warned about a new tax scam.
In Russia, cases of fraudulent mailings sent on behalf of banks warning about the introduction of a new tax have become more frequent. RIA Novosti reports this with reference to materials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Fraudsters, disguising themselves as large financial organizations, send clients emails with fake warnings. These claim that large sums will soon be debited from bank accounts as a new tax. To avoid monthly payments of tens or even hundreds of thousands of rubles, recipients are urged to immediately follow a link and submit an application to opt out. The link in the email leads to a fake website that looks like the bank’s official page. On that site the victim is asked to enter a phone number to log into the “personal account” and submit the application. Having obtained the number, the fraudsters use it to access the real banking app, to which a one-time confirmation code is sent.
