Bridge to the Heavens: a creative meeting with poet and publisher Irina Chudnova was held at KIU.
First-year students of the Faculty of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication at KIU came one step closer to Chinese culture at a meeting with a unique guest — poet, translator and publisher Irina Chudnova, whose work has become a living bridge between Russian and Chinese cultures.
The lecture title "Chinese Poetry Up Close" could not have expressed its essence better: students and faculty were given the rare opportunity not just to hear about Chinese poetry, but to see it from the inside, through the prism of someone who lives and breathes it.
Irina Chudnova is a multifaceted and respected figure. She is not only a talented author of poetry and prose who has lived in China for many years and freely blends Russian and Chinese in her work, but also a representative of the Beijing publishing house Sinolingua, a laureate of numerous literary awards and a first-rate translator. Her professional perspective on poetry became the key that opened up the intimate secrets of this ancient art for the audience. As Igor Bikeev, First Vice-Rector of KIU, remarked at the opening of the event, Irina Chudnova is a kind of conduit between the two cultures, and that makes her gifted poetry all the more valuable.
Immersion in the world of character-based lyric poetry
During the lecture, Irina Chudnova led listeners along the winding paths of Chinese poetry. She explained in an accessible and engaging way the subtleties of translation, clarifying how the reception of a poem differs across eras and how the mechanism of Chinese versification is organized. Listeners learned how the same character can give rise to different images in a translator’s mind, and why translating poetry is always an act of co-creation.
The guest placed special emphasis on a deep understanding of the Chinese language. “Chinese is not just a subject to study, but a whole world that requires constant immersion and attention,” Irina stressed. These words became the leitmotif of the entire meeting, reminding everyone that mastering the language opens doors to a rich culture with a thousand-year history.
A valuable gift for future specialists
A landmark moment of the meeting was the presentation to Kazan Innovative University of a valuable gift from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and the publisher Sinolingua — access to a specialized educational platform for preparing for Chinese language exams. This resource will become a powerful practical tool for students of the Faculty of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication studying Chinese and will assist them in achieving academic and professional goals, as well as in future internships in China as part of their studies at KIU.
The meeting with Irina Chudnova became a genuine dialogue of cultures. She vividly demonstrated how linguistics and literature intertwine, creating a space for mutual understanding and intellectual enrichment.
