RKB doctors reconstructed the forehead of an SVO fighter after a severe wound.
Doctors at the Republican Clinical Hospital restored the forehead of a special military operation participant with the callsign Tatarin using 3D printing technology, the RCH press service reported.
The man volunteered for the front in February last year. On July 26, while carrying out a mission, he suffered severe injuries to the head, abdomen, right knee and left thigh. The fighter could be evacuated only after two days — he was carried off the battlefield by his commander.
The man spent almost two months unconscious in hospitals after the injury and only regained consciousness in August last year. The left side of his body was almost paralyzed, and doctors doubted that he would be able to walk in the near future. However, Tatarin soon stood on his feet — at first with a crutch.
He underwent several operations at the Kirov Military Medical Academy in Saint Petersburg. After being discharged from the military, he continued treatment with civilian specialists and consulted a neurosurgeon at the Republican Clinical Hospital.
After a CT scan of the head, the patient was admitted to Neurosurgical Department No. 2. Over two weeks, neurosurgeon Nikita Nikolaev created a 3D model of the skull in a special program and printed the missing bone fragment. Then, based on this model, a titanium plate was manufactured to precisely match the patient’s anatomy.
The skull reconstruction surgery was performed by neurosurgeon Nikita Nikolaev and maxillofacial surgeon Ilnur Kashapov. The procedure was successful, and the man was discharged home just five days later.
According to the RCH press service, the hospital has already performed 14 similar operations using 3D modeling and printing. Specialists note that this technology reduces surgery time and allows the skull shape to be restored as accurately as possible. Photo: ru.freepik.com
