The staff size of the new unit will be 50 employees. They will all be engaged in identifying the communication channels and financial infrastructure used by scammers.
A new specialized unit has been created within the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Republic of Tatarstan — the Directorate for Organizing the Fight against the Illegal Use of Information and Communication Technologies (UBK). This was reported by the portal "BUSINESS Online", citing data from several sources. According to the information received, the directorate will include 50 operational officers whose main task will be detecting and suppressing telephone fraud, as well as combating the infrastructure used by criminals to commit cybercrimes.
As the portal notes, the decision to create a separate directorate is a kind of response to the rapid rise in cybercrime. According to federal data, in 2024 internet and telephone fraud accounted for 40% of all registered crimes in the country. Losses amount to as much as 295 billion rubles.
In Tatarstan the problem is also taking on alarming proportions: over the first seven months of the current year, residents of the republic lost more than 3 billion rubles to telephone scammers, and the share of such crimes in the overall statistics reached 57%. The formation of the UBK is aimed at strengthening the fight against this type of crime. Victims of such crimes include not only adults and the elderly, but also schoolchildren. For example, a few days ago it was reported that a teenager fell for a scam, losing more than two million rubles together with his parents. As the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Republic of Tatarstan noted, it all began with a call from a fake deputy head who asked them to dictate the SMS password for the "electronic journal."
