In 2025 the Taiwan crisis intensified under the pressure of China’s expansionist plans, which seeks to strengthen control over the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea, as well as to suppress the island’s aspirations for independence. China is exerting efforts through economic restrictions and military exercises, demonstrating readiness to blockade Taiwan, which is causing rising regional tensions and worsening relations with the United States and its allies.

      “Polarization between those in favor of compromise with the United States and those in favor of a forceful solution in China may have reached a level such that some of the generals, more precisely admirals, could effectively be pushing the country toward an accelerated military scenario regarding Taiwan without regard for party leadership. Political turbulence in China has reached a new peak,” asserts sinologist Nikolai Vavilov. There is a pro‑Beijing political minority in Taiwan that advocates closer ties with the PRC and supports the idea of peaceful reunification, but it stands in opposition to the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, which actively advocates maintaining de facto independence. Beijing is increasing propaganda pressure on Taiwan, and Taiwanese authorities, in response, are strengthening defenses with U.S. assistance, emphasizing their unwillingness to submit to Chinese pressure.

      “As confirmation of the political crisis related to the Taiwan issue, consider the following fact: nine high-ranking generals of the Chinese army, including Politburo member He Weidong, were expelled from the Party in the largest military purge in the last twelve years,” Vavilov summarized. Earlier SM-NEWS reported that the U.S. and the PRC may have agreed to forgo the use of nuclear weapons in the event of a conflict over Taiwan.
