UNICS beat Lokomotiv-Kuban and extended its winning streak to five games to open the season.

      Kazan UNICS, in a hard-fought confrontation, defeated Krasnodar’s Lokomotiv-Kuban, managing to snatch victory in the fourth quarter. Thus, Velimir Perasovic’s team extended its winning streak to five consecutive games.

      The Krasnodar side started the match more actively. Patrick Miller began terrorizing UNICS’s defense in the paint and scored his team’s fifth point by the end of the first minute, completing a 2+1 on a foul. However, over the next nearly six minutes the Kazan team allowed the visitors to score only 2 points while they themselves put up 16!

      Soon Paris Lee got involved, scoring 5 straight points to tie the score. C.J. Bryce accompanied him – 5:7. Bingham then joined in, increasing the lead. By the end of the seventh minute the scoreboard read 16:7 in favor of UNICS. After a poor start the Kazan team quickly regrouped, switched their focus to defense, and the game took off.

      Yudin called a timeout and Lokomotiv’s players began to move faster, immediately scoring 4 points and then drawing a foul on Kulagin. The Kazan attack fell apart, and thus 16:7 quickly turned into 16:14. Perasovic had to call a timeout. The Kazan players rallied, but that total dominance did not return – 22:18 at the end of the quarter.

      In the second period the Kazan side held that advantage throughout the ten minutes. During the period Jalen Reynolds and Marcus Bingham put on highlight dunks, and Bingham hit his first three-pointer, finally finding the net. At halftime the score on the Basket-Hall video board was 35:26 in favor of the Kazan team.

      After the break the seesawing returned. Neither team could pull away by much, so the lead on the court kept changing. Perasovic, at another timeout, asked to simplify the play and take easier shots. But after Jalen Reynolds hit a three and once again put Kazan ahead, the visitors started to play more interestingly and went in front before the decisive quarter – 49:50.

      The fourth quarter began with a spectacular dunk by Reynolds, who literally powered through a Lokomotiv defender. Belenitsky casually passed the ball straight into an opponent’s hands, but immediately made up for the mistake by returning and blocking a shot under the rim in style. Overall the teams went toe-to-toe, each scoring 7 points, until Perasovic took another timeout. That’s when Reynolds finally went berserk, throwing down dunks and scoring under the hoop. UNICS surged ahead again – 61:57.

      In the second half of the quarter the Kazan side firmly established dominance; Lopatin played brilliantly, scoring 7 points. Paris Lee put the finishing touch by hitting a three and making it 69:60. Moreover, after that it was only the Kazan players operating on the court, extending their double-digit lead to 74:63.
