      The Kazan Zoobotanical Garden summed up the results of a naming contest for a pair of Amur tigers. The predators, which were recently brought to the city, are now called Basur and Sayana. The winner of the contest will receive commemorative prizes.

      The male was given the name Basur — it has several meanings. According to one version, the name has Islamic origins and means “pure” or “bright.” In Arabic, Basur is associated with beauty. According to another version, the name is Uralic — in that case it may mean “beautiful” or “beloved.”

      The female was named Sayana. According to one version, it has Kazakh roots. In southern Siberia there is a mountain with a similar name, whose peak is called “klyk” (“fang”), the Kazan Zoobotanical Garden explained.

      The Amur tigers were brought from Khabarovsk Krai. The female is currently one year and four months old, and the male is one year old. The cubs’ journey from Khabarovsk to Kazan lasted 18 hours. First the animals were delivered to Moscow, then they arrived in the capital of Tatarstan on a special road train. The tigers coped well with the trip. The zoo’s new residents are currently under mandatory quarantine — after it ends, anyone interested will be able to see them.

      Recall that the animals were on the verge of death in the wild. The male was found last winter in the Nanaysky District near the settlement of Troitskoye. The cub and his tigress mother began entering populated areas — which posed a threat both to the animals and to local residents. It turned out that due to an eye injury the adult tigress could not hunt, and the animals suffered from exhaustion and the cold.

      The female was found in the spring of 2025 near the village of Nekrasovka. She was orphaned and began approaching people in search of food. The predator was also in an emaciated condition.

      Thanks to the help of specialists, both cubs underwent rehabilitation and regained strength. On the recommendation of the curator of the Amur tiger breeding and conservation program, it was decided to transfer the predators to permanent residence at the Kazan Zoobotanical Garden.

      The Amur tiger is the largest subspecies of tiger. Its weight can reach up to 300 kg. These animals are listed in the Red Books of the world and of Russia. About 750 individuals remain in the wild.

      Transferring the predators to the Kazan Zoobotanical Garden will help preserve the gene pool of the Amur tiger. When they mature, the animals may, if necessary, form a pair and produce offspring as part of the Amur tiger conservation and breeding program.

      The Kazan Zoobotanical Garden houses 4,708 animals of 139 species. Of these, 26 species are included in the International Red Book; in the Red Book of the Russian Federation — 9 animal species and 13 plant species; in the Red Book of the Republic of Tatarstan — 4 animal species and 5 plant species. The new part of the zoo, “Zambezi River,” features a collection of African animals.
