      About 200 trees and hundreds of shrubs were cut down by unknown perpetrators on the territory of Russo‑German Switzerland in Kazan. Reports of the incident have been sent to all possible regulatory agencies.

      This was reported to Tatar‑inform today from the scene by a member of the council of the Tatarstan republican branch of the All‑Russian Society for Nature Conservation and eco‑activist Timur Eskaraev.

      “The tree felling was discovered by visitors to Russo‑German Switzerland who heard the noise of chainsaws. The cutting of the trees was not authorized. The plot is located in the water‑protection zone of the Kazanka, in the Kuybyshev Reservoir area, on the territory of a specially protected natural area (SPNA),” he said.

      According to him, the SPNA partially overlaps the gardeners’ associations SNT “Svetoch” and “Druzhba” — some of the oldest garden communities in Kazan, plots in which were once allocated among members of Kazan’s professorial community. Subsequently some of the garden plots were sold.

      As Anton Bortyakov, a member of the council of the Tatarstan republican branch of the All‑Russian Society for Nature Conservation and a Kazan biologist, told Tatar‑inform, specialists from the Department for Supervision of Green Plantings of the Committee for External Improvement of the Kazan Executive Committee visited the site.

      “They counted that about 200 trees and about 400–500 shrubs were cut down. The value of this territory lies in its formative function. It provides shelter for other species, including Red Book herbaceous plants — the forest orchid and the uzhovnik,” Bortyakov noted.

      According to him, trees were damaged over an area of more than 2 hectares. Timur Eskaraev added that various violations on the territory of the SPNA “Russo‑German Switzerland”, alas, occur frequently. Previously he had observed the consequences of an illegally dug canal for boats, dumping of soil into the Kazanka’s water area, and tree felling. Cases of setting poplar fluff on fire have also been repeatedly recorded. The incident was commented on by the Kazan city administration.

      “Specialists from the Committee for External Improvement inspected the specified territory, where they identified the illegal felling of more than 180 trees. Willows, alders and boxelder maple were predominantly affected. Necessary materials are now being prepared to file a statement with the Kazan Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs so that law enforcement agencies can identify those responsible, who will be held liable for the damage,” the city administration press service told Tatar‑inform today.
