      In autumn many gardeners think about their future flowerbeds. Mahinur Samigullina, a biologist from Naberezhnye Chelny, shared her knowledge and experience. The expert said that pre-winter sowing of seeds is an excellent way to get beautiful and strong flowers in the spring.

      For pre-winter sowing, plants such as aster, calendula, primula, arabis, heuchera, alyssum, lavatera, phlox, eschscholzia (California poppy), cosmos, marigolds, zinnia, snapdragon, viola (pansies), iberis (candytuft), delphinium, lupin, oxeye daisy (garden chamomile), narrow-leaved lavender and China pink are suitable. These flowers tolerate frosts well and delight with their blooms in spring.

      Mahinur Samigullina advises not to rush and not to wait too long. If seeds are sown too early, they may germinate and be killed by the first frosts. If you wait until severe frosts, frozen ground will not give the seeds a chance. The ideal time for pre-winter sowing is when the top layer of soil is covered in an icy crust in the morning but thaws during the day.

      Before planting, the soil must be dug to a spade’s depth so that it becomes loose and well aerated. When the ground has slightly frozen, make furrows whose depth corresponds to the size of the seeds. The larger the seeds, the deeper the furrows. Small seeds can be mixed with soil for easier sowing.

      After sowing, cover the furrows with dry soil and add a layer of peat on top for additional insulation. This will help retain moisture and protect the seeds from the cold. Don’t forget to mark the planting sites with labels so you don’t miss the seedlings among the weeds in spring.

      Samigullina noted that the area for pre-winter sowing should be clean and prepared in advance, writes chelny-izvest.ru. If any plants have already grown there, they must be removed so the flower seeds can develop freely.
