Oncologists at the Naberezhnye Chelny Oncology Dispensary cured a 100-year-old Red Army scout.

Doctors from the radiation therapy department of the Naberezhnye Chelny Clinical Oncology Dispensary successfully treated 100-year-old Great Patriotic War veteran Muhtasim abiy. The patient was admitted with squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, localized on the ear and the back of the head.

“According to Rishat Kutdusov, head of the radiation therapy department, the disease is quite aggressive, but no metastases were found in the veteran.

“We chose a gentle course of radiotherapy that allows us to precisely target the tumor without damaging healthy tissue. For a patient of this age, this is the safest option,” the doctor noted.

“Dad doesn’t like hospitals,” says the veteran’s daughter, Alfiya Mukhtasimovna. She and her son, Alexey, had long persuaded him to see a doctor. In the end Muhtasim abiy agreed, and in time. According to his daughter, the illness deprived the veteran of his usual activity. Before losing his sight he regularly walked five to seven kilometers a day. “If it weren’t for his eyes, he would still be walking,” she says.

Muhtasim abiy was born on February 23, Defender of the Fatherland Day. He went to the front as a very young boy.

“I never complain. Thank God! The doctors here are kind. It’s just that my eyes have failed me, my ear hurts a little — that’s all,” he says.

And then he suddenly recounts calmly, smiling: “A fragment flew toward my heart but missed. I was wounded in the stomach, everything was torn apart, but I remained alive. Thank God!” the Soviet scout thanks fate.

Chief physician Almaz Khaziev notes that this is precisely a case where timely diagnosis and modern therapy, combined with the attention of relatives, yield a positive result even at an advanced age.

After the course of treatment Muhtasim abiy feels well: he walks slowly with a walking stick, his daughter and grandson by his side. He no longer sees this world, but remembers everything in detail: the name of the Tatar village where he was born and raised as a complete orphan, the names of his comrades-in-arms, the roar of explosions and the first peaceful dawn. And you look at him — at the old scout — and you understand: there are people who embody an entire era!
