Eteri Tutberidze's Kazan pupil landed two triple Axels and won a medal at a Grand Prix event.

      Today, at the first stage of the Russian Figure Skating Grand Prix in Magnitogorsk, the women’s singles skaters performed their free programs. The competition was the senior-level debut for 16-year-old skater Dina Khusnutdinova. This off-season she moved from Kazan to Moscow to join Eteri Tutberidze’s group, while continuing to represent Tatarstan in competitions.

      After the short program the day before, Khusnutdinova was fourth, having touched the ice with her hand while attempting her signature triple Axel. But today the skater cleanly executed two triple Axels (one solo and one in combination). The ultra-C elements allowed Tutberidze’s pupil to finish 3rd overall in the event. She scored 204.76 points for the two programs.

      It should be noted that the triple Axel was already in Khusnutdinova’s repertoire during her time competing in Kazan; she had shown it several times at junior events. The move to Moscow was initiated by her coach in the capital of Tatarstan, Nadezhda Zayakina. “It’s hard to give the child up, especially when you’ve worked with them for so long. She came to me at 10; at that time she only had double jumps. But you have to move forward,” Zayakina told BUSINESS Online.

      Khusnutdinova was born in the village of Aksarino in the Zainsky District of Tatarstan. She began figure skating in Zainsk and moved to Kazan at age 10, where she trained at the Strela school.

      The victory at the Magnitogorsk stage was claimed by another of Tutberidze’s students, the reigning Russian champion Adelia Petrosyan, who scored exactly 223 points for the two programs; during the free program she fell while attempting a quadruple toe loop. Second place went to Anna Frolova, representing St. Petersburg, with 206.58 points.
