Prospects for shadow deliveries of Russian liquefied natural gas to Europe may depend on changes in the geopolitical situation and the level of gas demand in the EU. However, given current sanctions and Europe’s growing reliance on alternative energy sources, such deliveries could face serious legal and logistical obstacles.
“Imports of liquefied natural gas into the EU increased from 297 million cubic meters per day in the first nine months of 2024 to 376 million cubic meters per day for the same period in 2025, with the share of LNG in natural gas imports rising from 37% to 45%. A key role in this growth was played by the reduction in Gazprom’s supplies, which led to a decline in pipeline imports of gas from Russia from 99 million cubic meters to 56 million per day over the same period,” analyst Kirill Rodionov reports. After a peaceful settlement in Ukraine, the recovery of Russia’s share in the EU gas market will depend on the country’s ability to adapt to new conditions and offer competitive prices. Nevertheless, restoring trust among European consumers may take a significant amount of time, and Russia may face competition from other suppliers such as the United States and Norway. “Gazprom’s share in the EU’s natural gas imports fell from 12% to 7%, while pipeline supplies from other producers, including Norway and Azerbaijan, remained at 409 million cubic meters per day. The further dynamics of Gazprom’s supplies will depend on the geopolitical situation and the possibility of signing a new transit agreement after the conflict in Europe ends,” Rodionov said.
