"Encourages interest in history": the "Great Ethnographic Dictation" was held in Kazan.

      The "Big Ethnographic Dictation" took place today at the House of Friendship of the Peoples of Tatarstan. The tenth All‑Russian educational event became a large celebration showcasing the multinational character of Russia and Tatarstan — representatives of different cultures living in the republic came in national costumes, and some of them played folk instruments before the start of the event.

      Guests were met in the lobby by the director of the State Budgetary Institution "House of Friendship of the Peoples of Tatarstan," Timur Kadyrov.

      "The House of Friendship of the Peoples traditionally serves as the main regional venue for the event. Representatives of various nationalities, national‑cultural associations, leaders and activists gather here. In total, more than a hundred venues have been organized across the republic this year where people will take the ethnographic dictation," he told a correspondent for Tatar‑inform.

      According to Kadyrov, those who wish can take the dictation online on the event's official website.

      "We have been taking the dictation for 10 years now; it is very interesting and encourages a deeper interest in studying the history of our country," he added.

      This year, participants at the offline venue had to answer 30 questions in 45 minutes. The dictation tasks are presented in test format. Eighty seats were prepared for participants at the House of Friendship of the Peoples, and they were all occupied. Among the dictation participants was the head of a department at the State Budgetary Institution "Tatkultresurscenter," Lyudmila Kuznetsova.

      "I'm taking the dictation for the first time. When I was offered to take it, I was very glad. Since my first year at the Kazan university I have been interested in ethnography. Now my main work is connected with studying the traditions and customs of various peoples of our country. I glanced through the questions and had the feeling that they are aimed at professional historians," she noted.

      Another dictation participant was Albina Shadrina, the first chair of the Yakut national‑cultural association and a member of the organization's council. She came to the event in a beautiful national costume.

      "Our organization has existed for four years and I have participated in the event for four years in a row. I believe that every citizen of Russia should know and be interested in the culture, customs and traditions of the different peoples of our large and friendly country. We are all different, but we are one whole, we are residents of Russia," she said.

      First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Nationalities Affairs and member of the "United Russia" faction Ildar Gilmutdinov congratulated everyone present on the upcoming National Unity Day, which is celebrated on November 4.

      "For our vast and multinational country it is very important to have holidays that unite us. The dictation is a unique project that allows us once again to immerse ourselves in the history, traditions and cultures of all our peoples," he said.

      In the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland and the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, for the first time in the history of the dictation, participants of the special military operation on the front line posed their questions via video.

      The event is organized by the Federal Agency for Nationalities Affairs; in Tatarstan it is conducted by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan. The "Big Ethnographic Dictation" introduces the cultures of the peoples living in Russia and also allows an assessment of the overall level of ethnocultural literacy. Residents of Russia and foreign countries of any age, education, social status, nationality, religion and citizenship can take part in the event, which runs from November 1 to 8, 2025.
