ENT doctor: using headphones leads to infections and illnesses
Headphones have become an integral part of life, but doctors warn: their constant use harms hearing. Candidate of Medical Sciences, otolaryngologist Lyudmila Elizarova confirmed these risks in an interview with Radio 1.
According to her, the problem lies in the very design of the gadgets. The inner ear is a very vulnerable and unprotected structure. Even a virus or severe stress against the background of acoustic load can lead to complete hearing loss.
The doctor explained that headphones, especially in-ear (earbud) types, are an unnatural source of sound for our bodies.
“Nature did not create the ear canal for such purposes. The farther the sound source is from the ear, the safer it is,” Elizarova added.
But the harm caused by headphones is not limited to threats to hearing. According to the otolaryngologist, their regular use can also cause other problems:
- fungal infections and otitis;
- injuries, for example, if one accidentally damages a boil;
- disruption of the natural self-cleaning process of the ear canal.
“The ear canal is arranged to expel earwax on its own. And we constantly interfere with this work by inserting foreign objects into our ears,” the doctor explained.
To reduce the risks, Lyudmila Elizarova recommends:
- choosing on-ear or over-ear headphones that do not penetrate deep into the ear;
- lowering the volume and taking regular listening breaks;
- generally reconsidering habits and, where possible, using headphones less often.
