      Kazan Vodokanal estimates the annual damage from sewer blockages caused by foreign objects and personal hygiene products at tens of millions of rubles. That money could be spent on infrastructure development. This was reported during a press tour of the city's treatment facilities and the city's largest Novo-Ometyevskaya sewage pumping station — which receives wastewater from one-fifth of the city.

      “It’s hard to calculate the damage, but it’s man-hours, system stoppages. Of course, it causes harm,” said the general director of MUP "Vodokanal", Rustam Abdulkhakov. “Up to 300 blockages a week, 40–50 a day! A crew could be addressing other emergencies, but is forced to respond to a blockage. And it’s not quick — it’s not just arrive, open a manhole, leave. You have to figure out where the blockage formed. Sometimes the blockage is here, but you can only access it from another manhole. That takes time.”

      Debris is removed by emergency crews in response to reports of sewer blockages, and is also collected at sewage pumping stations and the city’s treatment facilities. In the first 10 months of 2025, 2,600 cubic meters of debris were extracted from the sewer system — about 9 tons per day.

      The main enemies of the sewer system are wet wipes, cotton swabs, hygiene and contraceptive products — such items must be removed by hand. During journalists’ visit to a sewage pumping station, workers were cleaning grates that, in addition to clumps of wipes, had caught candy wrappers and food waste. One ton of waste is removed there per day. The cost of a single grate if it breaks is 3 million rubles. And if debris gets into a pump, its repair will cost 600,000 rubles and take six months. For this reason MUP on average repairs 38 units a year.

      “You cannot flush household, solid waste. Only human biological waste may be flushed,” said Marat Sibgatullin, head of the sewerage management department at MUP "Vodokanal".

      Residents were reminded that wipes and moist toilet paper do not disappear after flushing; the material decomposes slowly and remains in the pipes for a long time, collecting into a mass and forming a plug that will lead to a blockage. Residents are asked to throw such waste into the bin for unsorted household waste and then take it to the nearest container for solid municipal waste.
