But what is the situation in the Zelenodolsk district, we asked the head of the Zelenodolsk department of Rospotrebnadzor, Ekaterina GANEEVA.

      — Yes, an outbreak of the disease was recorded in a private household farm on the territory of the Pismyansky rural settlement (Leninogorsk district). The observation zone covers adjacent territories within a radius of 100 km, including Aznakaevsky, Aksubaevsky, Almetyevsky, Bavlinsky, Bugulminsky, Zainsky, Leninogorsky, Menzelinsky, Muslyumovsky, Nizhnekamsky, Novosheshminsky, Nurlatsky, Sarmanovsky, Tukaevsky, Cheremshansky and Yutazinsky districts. But there is no reason for Zelenodolsk residents to panic.

      — Still. Ekaterina Konstantinovna, how dangerous is avian influenza for humans?

      — Fortunately, it cannot yet be transmitted from person to person. But it is a great danger to agriculture. The spread of the virus causes enormous economic damage; in various countries around the world millions of domestic birds have already had to be culled. I will quote the official statement from our agency: “There is no threat of the spread of this virus across the territory of the Russian Federation.” Nevertheless, the risk of avian influenza crossing over to humans remains an area of special attention for Rospotrebnadzor. According to our head Anna Popova, test systems are being prepared for every new virus that creates pandemic potential. In addition, vaccine prototypes are being developed in case of necessity.

      — Not from person to person — no, but are there examples of people becoming infected from birds?

      — In December 2020, an outbreak of influenza among birds was recorded at one of the poultry farms in the Astrakhan region. Two months later, infection was confirmed in seven employees of the enterprise. The sick experienced mild health disturbances (throat irritation), all were treated on an outpatient basis. All infected recovered, and the illness was very mild for them. Although strains with extremely high lethality can also emerge. According to WHO data, from 2003 to 2014 the H5N1 subtype infected 665 people, of whom 392 died.

      — How justified is the panic in chats: “Don’t drink raw eggs!”?

      — I do not recommend drinking them at all, but not because of avian influenza. There is a danger of salmonellosis! The source of infection in this case is not the eggs themselves but the laying hens. Salmonella can be on the surface of eggs; when the shell is intact, the infection does not penetrate inside. But as soon as the slightest microcrack appears, the bacteria rush inward. Salmonella can survive on the eggshell for 17 to 24 days. The longer eggs are stored, the higher the probability of Salmonella penetration. Salmonellosis manifests as digestive disorders: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, sometimes fever. Its consequences are especially dangerous for the elderly, young children, and people with chronic illnesses. But I repeat, there is no cause for concern; the main thing is to follow simple hygiene rules.
