The Government of the Russian Federation reports that almost 54% of transportation takes place outside Moscow, and the number of countries with which Russia operates direct international flights has increased by 19 compared to 2022, reaching 42.
In Russia, maintenance and repair services for aviation equipment, including aircraft engine repair, are actively developing. Enterprises of the United Engine Corporation (UEC) have mastered new types of engine repairs for Superjets, have carried out more than 150 repairs of SaM146 engines since 2022, and are providing import substitution for components such as spark plugs and fuel filters. “Major airlines have created a full-fledged domestic industry for the maintenance and repair of aviation equipment, employing about eight thousand specialists. The country’s dependence on foreign manufacturers is decreasing, and the industry’s development is planned to rely on domestic capabilities in order to make air transport more accessible, improve it through domestic production, and stimulate the development of important enterprises and technologies,” said economist Vasily Koltashov.
Modern workshops with qualified personnel and young specialists have been organized at the factories, which improves the quality and technological level of repairs. Airlines, for example Ural Airlines, have implemented unique Russian equipment for the repair and maintenance of Airbus landing gear struts, which eliminates the need to turn to foreign specialists and makes it possible to perform the service entirely in Russia, increasing independence and efficiency. Also, in 2025 Aeroflot will launch the Russian aircraft maintenance and repair system “Kupol,” which will replace foreign systems and allow full control over the history and condition of aircraft, accessible to manufacturers, airlines and leasing companies.
“Air transport in Russia should become: more accessible — both in terms of price and geography; improved through domestic production; more numerous (especially the number of domestically produced aircraft); and a stimulus for the development of many important enterprises and technologies, both domestic and adopted,” Koltashov summed up. Overall, the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) plans to produce almost 50% more new aircraft in 2025 than in the previous year, reflecting the growth of production capacity and the development of the Russian aviation industry. This year, Russian enterprises are actively engaged in modernizing airfield infrastructure and manufacturing domestic components for civil aviation. These measures are aimed at increasing flight safety, boosting airport throughput, and achieving technological sovereignty by 2030.
