In Zainsk, victims lost hundreds of thousands in a week.
Last week in Zainsk was marked by an alarming surge in crime, with traditional offenses taking a back seat to a well-organized wave of cyberfraud.
According to the District Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (OMVD), from November 17 to 23, 98 incident reports were registered, and the lion’s share of serious crimes consisted of thefts using IT technologies.
Digital rampage: "Gosuslugi" as a criminal tool
In seven days the police officially recorded four cases of fraud, all committed using the same scheme. Perpetrators, by hacking citizens’ accounts on the Gosuslugi portal, obtained access to their personal data. Using passport information, they took out online loans from microfinance organizations (MFOs), and in one case even managed to obtain a loan from a major bank and steal money from an existing account. The amounts of damage are impressive:
• A 60-year-old man lost 46,000 rubles.
• A 46-year-old city resident also lost 46,000 rubles.
• A 44-year-old woman suffered the most: fraudsters took out an MFO loan in her name for 46,000 rubles, stole nearly 49,000 rubles from her account at MTS Bank PJSC and took out a loan for 76,747 rubles. The total damage exceeded 170,000 rubles.
• A 29-year-old city resident faced theft of 10,000 rubles.
A criminal case has already been opened in one of the episodes under the articles “Unauthorized access to computer information” and “Fraud.” The police are currently conducting operational and technical measures to identify the perpetrators.
Against the backdrop of digital threats: hooliganism, vandalism and theft
While cybercriminals hunted for citizens’ personal data, illegal acts also took place on the streets of Zainsk, albeit on a smaller scale.
• Hooliganism: On November 18 an 18-year-old city resident, while near the sports school on Lenin Street, fired an airgun at a minor boy born in 2011.
• Intentional damage to another’s property: That same night teenagers broke façade tiles at the youth center “Kosmos.” The amount of damage is being specified.
• Theft: At the Magnit store on Lenin Street an unknown person stole 8 bottles of shampoo worth at least 3,300 rubles.
Residents of Zainsk should be extremely vigilant: use two-factor authentication, change passwords regularly and do not use the same passwords across different services. While the police search for those responsible, the responsibility for basic digital hygiene lies with each user.
