The Nativity Fast begins on November 28: what you can and cannot do on that day.
On November 28 the Nativity Fast begins — one of the longest in the church calendar. Beginning on November 28, 2025, the Nativity Fast will last until January 6, 2026. It is a time of spiritual purification and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Christ.
In the folk calendar, November 28 is observed as the day of Saint Gury the Frosty, which is dedicated to Saints Gury, Samon and Aviv. These saints lived in Greece and, during the persecutions of Christians, steadfastly defended their faith, for which they were captured and executed.

What can be done on November 28
On Gury’s Day special attention was paid to caring for domestic animals, especially horses. They were groomed, fed selected hay, and rites were performed to protect them from winter ailments. Housewives baked bread, which was blessed and given to the animals as a charm against the cold.
Women took care of household chores: they washed, cleaned, and prepared winter provisions. Visiting the bathhouse on this day was considered important for cleansing body and soul. People tried to behave modestly, avoided quarrels and conflicts, and prayed for the health of their loved ones.
In the evening families gathered at the common table, thanked each other for their work during the past year, and made plans for the winter. On the first day of the Nativity Fast they observed sukhoyedeniye (eating dry food): only plant-based foods that were not boiled, fried or baked were placed on the table. To satisfy hunger they added nuts, honey and dried fruits.
