The EU has set a deadline on the issue of frozen Russian assets.
The European Union intends to make a decision on frozen Russian assets at the European Council meeting on December 18. This was stated by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barro in an interview with La Tribune Dimanche.
“All of this will be the subject of discussions in the coming days, which, I hope, will lead to a decision at the European Council meeting on December 18,” he said.
The official called guaranteeing the blocking of Russian assets located in Europe “the number one priority.” As the minister clarified, European countries intend “to protect Ukraine from financial difficulties over the next two years.”
At the end of October Politico wrote that the EU had agreed on a mechanism to use frozen Russian assets to issue Ukraine a so‑called reparations loan. It was also asserted that the European Commission proposed creating an insurance system: it would allow EU members to be promptly compensated if they have to return the debt. Amid discussion of the initiative, the media, citing sources, also reported that the United States opposes the plan to transfer revenues from Russian assets to Ukraine.
Later the media wrote that the European Commission’s main condition for allocating €140 billion to Ukraine from frozen Russian assets was finding a legal structure for the “further immobilization” of the funds.
Recall that earlier, amid these discussions, Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov compared the debate over seizing Russian assets to the behavior of a gang. In early October Bloomberg reported that Russia could nationalize and quickly sell off foreign assets in response to a possible seizure of its assets by the EU.
