Kyrgyz citizens vote in the Jogorku Kenesh elections in Kazan.
Early parliamentary elections for the national parliament — the Jogorku Kenesh — are being held in the Kyrgyz Republic today. In connection with this, polling stations have been opened in Kazan and Naberezhnye Chelny for citizens of that country who are in Tatarstan.
Voting began at eight in the morning and will end at eight in the evening, General Consul of the Kyrgyz Republic in Kazan Erik Beyshembiev told reporters.
“The elections of deputies to the Jogorku Kenesh are a major political event for all citizens of Kyrgyzstan, regardless of where they are — in their country or abroad. They come to the polling stations with a sense of patriotism to fulfill their civic duty,” he said.
According to the consul general, one hundred polling stations have been opened abroad, including 40 in Russia, two of them in Tatarstan. About 6,000 residents of Kyrgyzstan live in the Republic of Tatarstan, he specified.
“Regardless of where in Russia Kyrgyz citizens are, they can travel to the nearest city where a polling station is open and vote there. Maybe someone is just passing through a city that has a station. The most important thing is to have permanent registration in Kyrgyzstan. A passport must be presented when voting,” Beyshembiev noted.
The territory of Kyrgyzstan is divided into 30 electoral constituencies. Three deputies will be elected in each constituency, and a total of 90 members of parliament will be elected.
Aibek Igamberdiev, together with his wife, voted at the polling station in Kazan located at: 6 Spartakovskaya St.
“We came with my wife from Nizhnekamsk to vote. We have been living in Russia for two years. I work as a dentist in Nizhnekamsk. This is our first time voting in elections in Russia; before that we voted in our country. We have been waiting for this day. Especially since today is Sunday, it is very convenient to come and vote,” he said.
The Jogorku Kenesh (translated from Kyrgyz — “Supreme Council”) is the highest unicameral legislative body of the Kyrgyz Republic. It consists of 90 deputies elected for a five-year term.
A key change in these elections was the shift from a party-list system to a majoritarian one. Instead of voting for party lists, specific self-nominated candidates will be elected.
