According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word of the year is “rage bait” — a term describing a “bait for anger.”
“In a perfect summation of the chaos of 2025 — after public voting and analysis by our language experts — rage bait was named ‘Word of the Year,’” the university press writes on social media.
The press explained that the word became popular because users began to engage with content more consciously. In response, creators started to use provocations more actively to attract views and clicks.
“Rage bait” refers to deliberately created online content whose main purpose is to provoke outrage and anger in the audience. This is achieved by including provocative elements, and the ultimate goal is to increase traffic and engagement metrics.
In Russia the most popular word this year was “Victory.”
