Folk omens for December 28, 2025: what you can and cannot do on this day

Traditions, prohibitions and wisdom on the day of Saint Tryphon of Pechenga — what the old calendar advises for the mind, mercy and family well‑being.

At the end of December in Rus’ people honored the memory of saints whose lives became examples of spiritual struggle and enlightenment. December 28, dedicated to the founder of a northern monastery, was considered a time to pay attention not only to faith but also to knowledge, and to show special care for loved ones. In our material — signs and customs of the day of Tryphon of Pechenga.

The Orthodox Church on December 28 (December 15 in the old style) commemorates Venerable Tryphon of Pechenga, enlightener of the Lopars (Sami) and founder of the Trinity Pechenga Monastery on the Kola Peninsula in the 16th century. Among the people he was venerated as the patron of sailors and travelers, and also as a saint who helps with learning.

Weather signs for December 28: a forecast for March and the harvest

It was believed that the weather on this day shows what March and the coming harvest will be like.

      - “Whatever the weather on December 28, such will be March” — the main sign of the day.

      - Morning hoarfrost on the trees — for a clear, sunny day without precipitation.

      - Dry, fine snow — for a hot, dry summer.

      - A red, scarlet morning dawn — for severe frosts.

      - Windows in the house fogging up — for a thaw.

      - A cat pressing to the heat (to the stove, to people) — for a sharp cold snap.

      - A frosty day — for a rich grain harvest in the following year.

What may and should be done on December 28

The day was favorable for study, good deeds and strengthening family ties.

      - Study and read. It was believed that any activity related to acquiring knowledge would prosper on the day of Saint Tryphon. It was recommended to read, learn and master new crafts.

      - Help those in need. Mercy shown on this day, according to beliefs, returned to a person doubled. One should give alms, feed the hungry, help a neighbor.

      - Pray to Saint Tryphon. He was especially invoked by sailors, travelers and all whose work is connected with the road, asking for protection on the way. People also prayed to him for the gift of reason and success in studies.

      - Make a wish at dawn. If one greeted the morning dawn, especially a red one, and made a heartfelt wish, it had every chance of coming true.

      - Conclude employment agreements. The day was considered fortunate for hiring someone or starting a new responsible undertaking.

What is strictly forbidden on December 28

The day’s prohibitions were aimed at preserving health, family happiness and personal well‑being.

      - Laughing and reveling (for unmarried girls). It was believed that excessive merrymaking on this day could lead to the girl crying a lot in the future and to an unhappy marriage.

      - Complaining about the weather and grumbling. Dissatisfaction with the cold or severe weather, according to the sign, could bring serious illness upon the complainer.

      - Leaving home for a long journey or to visit someone. Whoever left their home on this day risked spending most of the coming year separated from their family.

      - Quarreling and conflicting with loved ones. Any dispute begun on December 28 could drag on and lead to a serious falling‑out.

      - Sharing one towel or other personal items between people of different ages (the elderly and the young). It was believed that through shared household items the young could “take” health from the elderly, and the old could “pass on” their ailments to the young.

Observing these traditions helped our ancestors spend the day not only in the spirit of honoring the saint but with practical benefit as well: devoting time to self‑development, doing good, and carefully preserving peace and health in their family.
