      In the Zelenodolsk district they plan to expand the territory of the Raifa Bogoroditsky men's monastery and return it to its historical borders of the early 20th century. This was reported by the head of the Zelenodolsk district, Mikhail Afanasyev, on his Telegram channel.

      The centerpiece of the renewed territory will be a unique museum complex that will encompass the history of the Russian state beginning in the 8th century. The project is being handled by Timur Yegorov, head of the company Mir Group, Afanasyev wrote.

      According to the district administration’s press service, Raifa was visited by 1.2 million people this year. Due to such tourist flows during the New Year holidays and Epiphany, additional parking areas for motorists will be organized near the monastery.

      Recall that the Raifa hermitage was founded in the 17th century by the recluse Philaret, and the monastery itself was founded in 1661. By the beginning of the 20th century the Raifa Monastery was a complex with several cathedrals and a bell tower. The stone crenellated walls and towers, erected in 1690–1717, stretched for more than half a kilometer around the perimeter and formed a picturesque monastic kremlin. In 1917 the monastery was closed, and its grounds and buildings were used as a penal colony and camp, which led to a significant reduction and destruction of the historic buildings. Restoration only began in 1991.
