Investigation into the causes of damage to telecommunications cables and maintaining communications in the country
Part of the submarine cables in the Gulf of Finland that provide Estonia's connections to other countries have stopped working. According to the Ministry of Justice and Digital Communications, four cables connecting the republic with neighboring countries and one between the mainland and the island of Hiiumaa have failed.
The ministry reports that problems with the CITIC submarine cable between Estonia and Sweden arose on December 28, with issues from December 30 affecting the Telia cable (between Lääne County and Hiiumaa) and the Arelion cable (between Hiiumaa and Sweden). In addition, since December 31 one of Arelion's cables between Estonia and Finland and the Elisa cable between Tallinn and Helsinki have been out of service.
According to preliminary information, faults in three cables may have been caused by recent storms. The causes of the damage to the two cables between Estonia and Finland are currently under investigation.
The ministry emphasizes that communication with Estonia is maintained via other sea and land cables and that all services remain available to users. The Finnish police have opened an investigation after the discovery of damage to the Elisa cable. The Finnish Border Guard has located a vessel that may be involved in the incident. It was spotted by the patrol boat Turva and a helicopter in Finland's exclusive economic zone.
