The Interior Ministry explained which data should not be shared with outsiders.
The Department for the Organization of the Fight Against the Illegal Use of Information and Communication Technologies of the Russian Interior Ministry reminded citizens of the need to protect their personal data. According to the department, even the accidental disclosure of some information can lead to data leaks, theft of money, or the use of someone’s identity for criminal purposes.
Officials noted that you should never send documents such as a passport, INN (taxpayer ID) or SNILS (pension insurance number), including photographs of them. “A photo of your passport in response to a request to ‘confirm your identity’ is a direct route to theft,” the department warned.
You should also not share one-time codes from SMS messages or push notifications. Genuine security services never request such data.
In addition, information about your place of residence, current location, routes and the phone numbers of close relatives is dangerous. The combination “Name + Date of birth + Phone” may allow attackers to guess passwords, gain access to email, or take out a loan in someone else’s name.
The Interior Ministry emphasized that personal data are not just numbers. They are your financial security, reputation and protection of your family. Citizens were urged to be careful and not to send codes, photos of documents, or “protection” data to strangers.
