Russia intends to create and launch genetic testing programs for couples preparing to become parents, TASS reports.
The testing is intended to detect hidden carriage of dangerous genes in people, which will make it possible to calculate the risks of a child being born with genetic diseases even before pregnancy.
The Russian Ministry of Health was instructed to draw up a plan during 2026 for how to gradually add this testing to the existing screening of newborns.
Recall that currently the country provides free screening of all newborns for a number of hereditary diseases, but a similar check for prospective parents does not yet exist; they can undergo it only on their own initiative and at their own expense.
