The imam of Kazan’s "Gailya" mosque, Rustam Khayrullin, voiced the key Islamic requirements regarding the appearance of believers in the gym.
The religious figure paid particular attention to rules for women. In his words, Muslim women should categorically not wear tight-fitting clothing while exercising. Instead, they should choose special sports suits sold in Muslim stores: they fully cover the awrah and do not emphasize the contours of the body. The imam even advised husbands to give such suits to their wives — this will allow women to work out without violating Islamic norms.
No less strict requirements are imposed on the behavior of men. If a woman in inappropriate clothing is present in the gym, a Muslim should lower his gaze to avoid sin. "Lower your gaze, close your ears and train; thereby you will obtain good and not obtain sin," Tatar-inform news agency quotes Khayrullin.
The imam also warned young people against visiting the gym with unrighteous intentions. He recalled the Prophet’s words that a person’s recompense is according to his intentions. This means that if a man comes to the gym not to train but to look at women or try to meet them, this will be considered a violation of religious norms.
Overall, in the imam’s view, the main thing is to stay focused on the workout and not allow actions or looks that contradict Islamic canons. This approach will make it possible to combine care for the body with observance of spiritual prescriptions.
