From December 31, 2025 to January 11, 2026, more than 200,000 tourists visited Kazan, which is 16.7% higher than the same New Year holiday period a year earlier. According to the head of the city committee for tourism development, Alexander Shavliashvili, guests of Kazan and Tatarstan spent more than 1.5 billion rubles in total on accommodation, food, and entertainment. "Our task is to shape a sustainable image of Kazan as one of the priority destinations for celebrating the New Year in Russia," Shavliashvili told RBC. For comparison, during the New Year holidays at the end of 2024 – beginning of 2025 tourists left about 1.2 billion rubles in the city, which at that time was already 19% more than the previous winter season.

Despite the significant growth in tourist numbers, average occupancy of accommodation facilities in Kazan, according to the city Association of Hotels, was only about 60%. As the director of the tourism committee noted, such a level cannot be considered optimal for a peak period. The main factor negatively affecting hotel occupancy is the rapid growth of the daily rental segment, which remains outside legal regulation and takes a significant share of tourists from the hotel sector. At the same time, Shavliashvili clarified that on January 3–4 hotel occupancy in the city still exceeded 90%.

During the previous New Year holidays average hotel occupancy reached 79%, and on the peak days of January 3–5 full occupancy was recorded.

It is worth noting that since January 1, 2025 Kazan has had a tourist levy paid by hotel and inn guests. This year its rate is 2 percent of the cost of accommodation (in 2025 it was 1 percent). Recall that earlier in Tatarstan the tax relief for new hotels was extended.
