At least 6,000 natives of Tatarstan have already died in the war against Ukraine — calculations by "Idel.Realii"

      Tatarstan, according to journalists' research, ranks second in the number of casualties overall in Russia. At least 6,011 natives of Tatarstan have already died since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. "Idel.Realii" has been keeping its own count of the dead since February 24, 2022. Our list includes only those whose deaths have been recognized in one way or another by the Russian side, relatives of the deceased, or educational or other public institutions. The actual numbers may be significantly higher. Just last week, "Idel.Realii" identified the names of another 474 residents of the Volga region who died in the war, of which 71 are from Tatarstan. After the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, several "volunteer" named battalions were formed in Tatarstan (in 2022, the "Timer" and "Alga" battalions were created, later "Batyr"). According to Andrey Kozlov, head of the military service recruitment point in Kazan, more than 12,000 people signed contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense in 2024. The plan was exceeded by 7%. In mid-July 2025, Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov stated that about 45,000 residents of Tatarstan had gone through the war with Ukraine or were participating in it.
