      Ionov Sergey Anatolyevich, 57 years old, call sign Ion, went to serve under contract in a special military operation in August 2024. He saw many acquaintances going to the front. "Many have not returned," Ion says calmly, but there is a heaviness of memories in his voice. He had military experience, but he does not elaborate on the details. "Yes, it came in handy," he only adds. Ion's service began in the Luhansk direction. He participated in battles for Donetsk, Pokrovsk, Lysychansk, and most recently was involved in the assault on Sumy in the Kursk region. At first, he served as a tank driver, but after losing his combat unit, the tank was burned, and he was transferred to infantry. "We were preparing to go to Soledar and in Pokrovsk — the tank took a direct hit. We had just gone out, preparing the vehicle for combat, and the first hit..." Ion recounts, holding back emotions. He had injuries — a gunshot wound, shoulder, scratches. He didn't have to recover: "They didn't let me go for a year; I was last on leave in January of last year." Now he has come home for a short time. For his service, Ion received the award "For Military Valor." Volunteers supported the fighters with supplies and food, which is especially important in winter: "In the dugouts, things keep you warm, but something else warms you there."

      Ion is from Zainsk. Before his service, he worked at a factory. He has a 17-year-old son who is proud of his father. Ion is returning from leave, but his gaze is calm and resolute. His choice was needed by many, and he made it without unnecessary words.
