A scientist from KFU explained what dangers an extreme surge in solar activity poses.
A strong radiation storm, one of the most powerful in the last 25 years, has been recorded on Earth. Solar activity levels have reached record highs; however, as noted by Professor Yuri Nefedyev from Kazan Federal University, there is no reason for most people to panic. According to the scientist, the events are related to the peak of the solar cycle, during which the number and intensity of solar flares increase. Despite the exceptional strength of the current storm, Earth's magnetosphere continues to effectively protect the planet from destructive consequences. For the majority of the population, the radiation storm will pass almost unnoticed. Significant disruptions in communication, navigation systems, and household appliances are not expected. At the same time, weather-sensitive individuals may experience a decline in well-being, including headaches, weakness, and fluctuations in blood pressure. One of the most spectacular consequences of the abnormal solar activity has been bright auroras, which have been observed even in regions where such phenomena are usually not recorded. As Nefedyev explained, the unusual intensity of the storm indicates an extremely powerful solar wind: its particles penetrated into near-Earth space deeper than standard values. From a scientific perspective, this phenomenon is considered abnormal; however, it does not pose a global threat.
