Tatarstan is among eight regions of Russia where the total volume of household debt on loans surpassed 1 trillion rubles. According to data published by Rosstat, as of January 1, 2026, the total debt of residents of the republic reached 1.1 trillion rubles. According to statistics, the majority of this amount is attributed to mortgage lending. Housing loans amounted to 722.2 billion rubles, confirming the nationwide trend of mortgage dominance in the structure of citizens' debts. Moscow remains the leader in terms of loan debt volume with an indicator of 4.4 trillion rubles. The top five also includes the Moscow region (2.9 trillion), St. Petersburg (1.9 trillion), Krasnodar Krai (1.6 trillion), and Tyumen region (1.5 trillion). Tatarstan is in sixth place, ahead of Sverdlovsk region (1.1 trillion) and Bashkortostan, where the debt closed the top eight, amounting to exactly 1 trillion rubles. Overall, the total debt of Russians on loans at the beginning of 2026 reached 36 trillion rubles. The statistics, prepared based on data from the Bank of Russia, do not include data on individual entrepreneurs and non-resident individuals. It was previously reported that at the end of the past year, 12,500 residents of Tatarstan filed lawsuits to declare themselves bankrupt. According to statistics, the republic ranked fourth in the country on this indicator, second only to Moscow, the Moscow region, St. Petersburg, and Krasnodar Krai.
