The consequence of an abnormally snowy winter in the Republic of Tatarstan may be a large-scale spring flood. To date, residents have already begun to report regular instances of flooding.
According to government forecasts, under an unfavorable scenario, 5,700 residential houses, home to 13,400 people, as well as 10 socially significant facilities, 55 road sections, and 28 bridges may be affected by flooding. This was reported at a briefing by the first deputy prime minister of the republic, Rustam Nigmatullin, as noted by "Tatar-inform." Special attention is being paid to settlements where transport communication is interrupted annually: among them are the village of Tersi in the Agryz district, the villages of Baikal and Urnyak, as well as several other settlements. The official noted that the republic is prepared for such a situation: fire trucks and ambulances will be sent to areas that may be cut off, and stores will receive food supplies in advance. In Kazan, residential areas such as Borisoglebskoye, Sukhaya River, Savinovo, Krasnaya Gorka, Yagodnaya Sloboda, Salmachi, and others are at risk of flooding. According to the head of the executive committee of the capital, Rustem Gafarov, the total area of possible flooding will be 20 square kilometers, affecting about 817 houses with 2,200 residents. For rapid response, a group of 82 maneuverable teams, 112 units of pumping equipment, and more than 2,000 sandbags have been formed. District administrations have received 5 million rubles each for anti-flood contracts. Starting from March 23, hydroposts will begin operating at key points, and in case of evacuation, 22 temporary accommodation points for 5,000 people have been prepared. In addition to the threat of flooding, large snow reserves have created a risk of winter crops rotting – this dangerous phenomenon has already been recorded in the Laishevsky district. Soil moisture in the republic has reached 99 percent. It was previously reported that a 118-year temperature record was broken in Kazan. Recall that the winter of 2026 in Kazan set a record for snowfall: in February, 89 mm of precipitation fell, which is almost 2.5 times the norm.
