"Idel.Realia" has established the names of over eight thousand natives of Tatarstan who died in the war against Ukraine.
The republic, according to journalists' research, ranks second in the number of confirmed deaths overall in Russia. At least 8,033 natives of Tatarstan have already died since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. "Idel.Realii" has been keeping its own count of the dead since February 24, 2022. Our list includes only those whose deaths have been recognized in one way or another by the Russian side, relatives of the deceased, or educational or other public institutions. The actual numbers may be significantly higher. Just last week, "Idel.Realii" identified the names of another 404 residents of the Volga region who died in the war, of which 80 are from Tatarstan. After the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, several "volunteer" named battalions were formed in the republic (in 2022, the "Timer" and "Alga" battalions were created, later "Batyr"). The exact number of natives of Tatarstan participating in the war against Ukraine is unknown. In 2024, more than 12,000 Tatarstan residents signed contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense, reported Andrey Kozlov, head of the military service recruitment point in Kazan. According to him, the plan was exceeded by 7%. In mid-July last year, Tatarstan's head Rustam Minnikhanov stated that about 45,000 Tatarstan residents had gone through or were participating in the war with Ukraine. Earlier, in March 2025, Minnikhanov announced figures regarding the number of contract soldiers and mobilized individuals from the republic for the war in Ukraine — 38,169 people — during a meeting with Vladimir Putin. At the beginning of March this year, the military commissioner of the Central and Avtozavodsky districts of Naberezhnye Chelny, Rashid Ilyasov, reported that in 2025 "the entire republic fulfilled the annual task by 110%." "They come from all over Russia because we have good motivation in Tatarstan," said the military commissioner. A former participant in the Russian invasion of Ukraine and ex-deputy of the State Council of Tatarstan, Rasim Baksikov, acknowledged at the end of July last year that "in terms of the percentage of the population on the front lines, Tatarstan outpaces other regions." In October last year, Ildar Allahverdiyev, deputy head of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for Tatarstan, reported that about 10% of convicted individuals in the republic had signed contracts with the Ministry of Defense of Russia and went to war against Ukraine. He stated that the Federal Penitentiary Service is actively working "to encourage convicts" to military service. According to counts by "Mediazona" and the "Russian Service of BBC," Tatarstan ranks second in the number of confirmed deaths overall in Russia. Bashkortostan leads; the war, according to "Idel.Realii," has claimed the lives of at least 9,310 military personnel from the republic. At the beginning of January this year, the authorities of Tatarstan increased the amount of the one-time regional payment for signing a contract for the war with Ukraine more than sixfold — from 400,000 to 2.5 million rubles.
